MY Oceana – Teak Decking Refit

O’Neills Shipwrights was approached to replace the exterior teak decks of the MY Oceana, Australian built Superyacht.

The existing decks had come to the end of their life, showing heavy wear with very little teak thickness remaining. We could see substrate glue showing through along with aluminium deck plate corrosion in areas. This was going to be the largest deck we have fabricated to date.

The Yacht is based in Sydney with the final refit being done at Gold Coast City Marina. This was the perfect opportunity for our two branches (NSW and Queensland) to work together to complete the project.

Our Sydney factory templated and fabricated the teak decking to exacting standards then freighted the pre-made panels up to the yacht in our Gold Coast City Marina team for the final install.

Challenges:

The first challenge was the sheer volume of products required. We started with a comprehensive planning schedule in order to organise all materials so that execution wasn’t interrupted. We do this to ensure minimal downtime for the vessel.

We used around 7,100 lineal meters of teak decking. Each piece being hand selected, cut to shape and then laid. We also used 168KG of Sikaflex 290DC deck caulking, 450 kg of epoxy glue and 170 square meters of substrate panelling thermo lite.

Navigating this project throughout the COVID-19 outbreak and Sydney lockdowns made this job extremely tricky. Our team members come from all over Sydney so we had to take into account Local Government Area lockdowns and compulsory testing.

We did our best to keep the project on time and meeting deadlines whilst also following all the NSW government guidelines and constraints.

Large projects like the MY Oceana bring the team a great deal of satisfaction and joy. They are an opportunity to work together and we appreciate overcoming the challenges they present daily.

Results:

The end results really speaks for itself. The yacht’s owners are over the moon with the results and the newly installed teak decks transform the exterior space. It’s a breath of new life into a lovely iconic Australian built Superyacht.
